Born in Calverley, near Bradford, Yorkshire, he was from a family of wool merchants.In 1842, he patented a machine for combing wool and other difficult fibers, including mohair and alpaca. This invention revolutionized worsted spinning and enabled large-scale production of lustrous mohair and alpaca fabrics. Lord Masham built Manningham Mills in Bradford, commonly called Listers Mill.
