Mary Queen of Scots

£400.00 per metre

Based on a fragment of an embroidered furnishing textile, now at Hardwick Hall, from a bed valance or wall hanging, titled The Fox and the Eagle’s Young, dating from 1569–1584 during Queen Mary's captivity at Sheffield Castle under the control of the Earl of Shrewsbury.

The lattice of intertwined ropes encloses the lily of France, thistle of Scotland, and rose of England - defiant emblems asserting Mary’s royal identity and her contested claim to the English throne.

The original panel was further decorated with small oval scenes based on the fable, The Fox and the Eagle’s Young, a story of betrayal and revenge: after the eagle steals a fox’s cub, the fox burns the nest, consuming the fallen young. The moral of the story - that betrayers will be punished.
