Archduchess Elizabeth was born in 1554, daughter of Emperor Maximilian II. She became Queen of France by marrying Charles IX, a politically strategic union marked by religious tension. Gentle, devout, and reserved, she struggled at the French court. Widowed young, she returned to Vienna, dedicating her later life to charity and piety. This luxurious brocade fabric is a reproduction of the dress worn by the Archduchess in the 1573 painting by Jooris van der Straaten.
