Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21 August 1872 - 16 March 1898) was an English illustrator and author. His drawings in black ink, influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. This fabric reproduces several of the remarkable illustrations which Beardsley created for The Yellow Book (a literary publication which he contributed to significantly) and also The Story of Venus and Tannhauser, based upon the opening act of Richard Wagner's Opera, Tannhauser, 1843. The latter novel, left unfinished at Beardsley's death, re-tells the old legend of Tannhasuer's visit to the glamorous pleasure palace of Venus, combining Beardsley's fascination for abandoning oneself to sexual pleasure and his love of the artificial and exotic. The image shows the full width of the fabric.
